What does a healthy lifestyle actually look like?
We hear a lot about making healthier lifestyle choices — but that can mean so many different things.
Being healthy isn’t just about how often you exercise or what you eat. It’s a holistic approach, where your movement, nutrition, recovery, environment and mental wellbeing all play a part. 🌿
I like to think about it as five simple pillars:
🏃 MOVE
Movement includes both everyday activity and structured exercise. Walking, stretching, strength training, taking the stairs — it all counts. The aim is simply to keep your body moving.
🥑 NOURISH
Nutrition is about more than counting calories. Think about the quality of what you eat, digestion, hydration and, where appropriate, supplementation. The goal is to give your body what it needs to function well.
😴 RECOVER
More isn’t always better. Sleep, rest, managing stress and allowing your body time to recover are just as important as being active. Recovery helps support your energy, resilience and overall wellbeing.
🛡️ PROTECT
Our surroundings affect our health too. Consider the things you’re regularly exposed to — from smoking and alcohol to pollutants, excessive sun exposure and other environmental stressors. You don’t need a perfectly “clean” environment; focus on reducing avoidable risks where you can.
🧠 THINK
Your mental health matters just as much as your physical health. Managing stress, maintaining relationships, learning new things, taking time for yourself and looking after your emotional wellbeing are all part of a healthy lifestyle.
The important bit? You don’t have to change everything at once.
Trying to overhaul your entire lifestyle overnight can quickly become overwhelming — and usually isn’t sustainable.
Instead, choose just one pillar to focus on this week. Pick one small, realistic change and see how you get on.
Maybe it’s a 20-minute walk each day.
An earlier bedtime.
Adding an extra portion of vegetables.
Taking five minutes away from your phone.
Or simply making more time to switch off.
Then build from there.
Small changes, repeated consistently, can add up. Progress — not perfection. 💚
